Academy Supports Renewal of Health Reform Talks

WASHINGTON — The American Academy of Nursing (AAN) strongly supports the administration’s efforts to revive discussions of a comprehensive health reform bill in Congress and cultivate commitments from both Democrat and Republican leaders.

“It is critical to re-establish the debate and prioritize health reform as a necessary catalyst for a healthy population and economic solvency,” said AAN President Catherine Gilliss, DNSc, RN, FAAN. “As the process moves forward during today’s bipartisan summit, we are encouraged that leaders will be open-minded and cognizant of the consequences of neglecting reform and staying with the status quo.”

The president’s proposal blended ingredients from the House and Senate Bill and incorporated diverse ideas. Today’s summit invites members of both parties to discuss proposals transparently and amid public inspection. As a driver of health reform that promotes affordability, accessibility and quality, AAN is committed to examining the evolving legislative pieces.

“Following the summit, the Academy will be a watchdog of the resulting legislative process and work diligently to ensure nursing innovations are included as an essential component of health reform,” said AAN CEO Pat Ford-Roegner, MSW, RN, FAAN.
